So sometimes things happen that will completely change your life. This week has been one of those times.
On Tuesday my son was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and we have been in hospital since. It’s not all doom and gloom – we caught this really early so a lot of the symptoms such as weight loss are not appearing.
For those that don’t know what Type 1 diabetes is (forgive me medical professionals), essentially the pancreas stops producing insulin, the reason for this is that the body has decided to attack the Beta cells in the pancreas and the reason for this isn’t well understood at all. There is a thought that a virus could trigger it and there are news articles correlating an increase in Type 1 diabetes in young people since COVID-19 – but who knows.
So what now?
Essentially for the rest of my son’s life he has to manually manage the sugar levels in his blood by either adding insulin (which allows sugar to be absorbed) or by adding sugar itself. Technology has really advanced and we have a 24/7 monitor attached to the body. However he could drop below or above safe levels at any time and intervention may be necessary.
We are in hospital so that as a family we can be trained so that when we go home we know what to do.
I will add to this story here. It’s not AI art but rather a personal story.
